Embracing challenges, trusting the process of change, and recognizing that periods of darkness or difficulty can lead to beauty and freedom. Artist was inspired by her own shadow work leading to transformation and growth occurring in her life this year.
We often delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.
Each piece of puzzle butterfly is made of signifies a piece of struggle and revelation received after addressing each emotional challenge with compassion and learning from it. Butterfly emerges in its most radiant colors and is surrounded by luminous light, feeling complete and protected by cave shell of the heart. Artist wants us to remember that when we listen to our heart, we are always protected and on the right path. Each vein coming from the heart’s bright red flesh carries the light into the butterfly cave. No matter how messy the thoughts that try to bombard us or the intensity of the storm we might face (outer night purple hues with shredded paper strings), the light is always to be found in that darkness and the more we follow it, the closer we get to feel whole and free.

‘LUSH PETALS’ – I painted this piece in London shortly after the lockdown in June 2020. I was inspired after seeing a beautiful photo of a headband made of orchids by my talented florist friend Genia. I kept buying myself cheap roses from Tesco during lockdown to insert joy into my apt and didn’t have a heart to trash them after they started dying, so I hang them upside down and ended up using them to recreate that headband image that was stuck in my head.

‘FOREVER YOUNG’ – I was transitioning into my 40’s, the number itself kept saying that no one stays forever young. I used an old T-Shirt with skull, cut it out and glued it on a happy silver textured background, added rhinestones into the eye hole and peacock feathers as hair. I figured, if this skull can, we all can stay forever young.

‘LADY GAGA TRYING TOO HARD’ – one day I saw an ad for velvet pants in Bloomingdales display window and the large focus on pants got my attention. I recreated it, but it seemed to be missing some action – I started going wild doing big hair, circus tents and used straw dipped in gold color to create a dotted acrobats between her legs. I don’t exactly know which part made me think of Lady Gaga… The shoes? The hair? The sunglasses? The whimsical wild combination of the ‘happening’ attire itself?
